This area at Smith Park has transitioned into a natural wildflower garden, supported by Citizens for Brentwood Green Space and the City of Brentwood. While the original plan focused on establishing milkweed for a butterfly habitat, the site has instead developed into a thriving mix of native wildflowers.
Multiple species now appear seasonally, including pink cosmos, sulphur cosmos, coreopsis, partridge pea, clasping coneflower, and other pollinator friendly plants. These blooms demonstrate that the site is successfully supporting naturalized wildflower growth.
A recognition sign has been installed to acknowledge CBGS’s contribution to the project. The City continues to work with CBGS on improving the site and exploring future opportunities for butterfly focused plantings.
Seasonal Milkweed Planting Scheduled
The City of Brentwood will conduct another round of milkweed planting at Smith Park later this fall. Based on updated guidance from the seed supplier, the next planting will take place after one or two hard frosts, which typically occur in late November or early December.
This timing allows natural cold stratification in the soil, which can improve germination for certain milkweed varieties. City staff will also till the ground before planting, providing better soil contact and giving this year’s planting the best possible conditions.
CBGS appreciates the City’s continued commitment to the project and looks forward to seeing how the late‑season planting performs.
