CBGS Partners with Brentwood City Environmental Board on Monarch Butterfly Habitat Project at Smith Park.monarch butterfly habitat project at smith park brentwood tn

In partnership with the Brentwood Environmental Advisory Board (EAB), Citizens for Brentwood Green Space (CBGS) supported the creation of a monarch butterfly habitat at Smith Park. Monarch populations have declined by 90% in recent decades, and the EAB identified habitat restoration as a priority project for 2024–2025. To address this, a 200-foot by 60-foot area along Smith Park’s unpaved access road was planted with native milkweed, the essential host plant for monarchs. The site was marked with “Wildflowers – Do Not Mow” signage and will include educational displays explaining the importance of pollinator conservation.

CBGS helped fund the effort, contributing to signage, seeds, and site preparation costs, while the EAB and volunteers provided labor, planting, and ongoing care. This project not only supports monarch butterflies and other pollinators but also engages the community by highlighting the role of native habitats in local conservation.
