smith park mountain bike trails descriptionThe new mountain bike trail system at Marcella Vivrette Smith Park offers something for every type of rider—whether you’re new to the sport or looking for a technical challenge. The roughly seven miles of interconnected trails blend scenic climbs, natural rock features, and historical storytelling woven through their names. Beginners can warm up on Hardscuffle Haul, a smooth, rolling trail that nods to Brentwood’s historic Hardscuffle community, or Kittie’s Crossing, a short loop with a stream crossing named in remembrance of Miss Kittie, one of the enslaved people who lived and worked on the Wilson Plantation. More experienced riders can test their skills on The Raven, Mississippian, or Boiling Spring Schoolmarm, all intermediate trails that highlight local history—from Native American heritage to early Brentwood landmarks like the Boiling Spring Academy.

For advanced riders, Stonebox and Freedom Pass deliver the most technical terrain. Stonebox features off-camber rocky singletrack inspired by the ancient stone caskets left behind by the Mississippian people, while Freedom Pass represents the difficult journey from slavery to freedom, honoring the 55 enslaved individuals once recorded on the Wilson property. Other highlights include Tower Trail, with views of the iconic WSM Radio Tower, and Harpeth Turnpike, a fast, flowing descent named after the historic roadway that once connected Brentwood and Arrington. All trails meet at Noble’s Corner (NoCo), the central hub of the system, named for one of the families tied to the land’s early history. Together, these thoughtfully designed trails showcase both the natural beauty and the deep cultural roots of Brentwood, offering riders an experience that’s physically rewarding and historically rich.
